Pursuant to MGLA c 48, s 28, the Bureau of Fire Control, through its head, the state (or chief) fire warden, aids and advises municipal forest wardens in preventing and extinguishing forest fires, and reports annually on fires in the Commonwealth. As part of its mandate, the bureau participates in a federal program authorized by PL 94-519 and PL 95-313, s 7, and implemented through 41 CFR 101.32.326 and 101.43.315 to borrow equipment declared surplus by the U.S. Dept. of Defense and assign it to rural fire departments. Such equipment remains federal property and must be returned to the General Services Administration when it becomes unusable or unneeded. Excess property acquisition files are created to acquire and assign such equipment.

The post of State Fire Warden was established under that of State Forester in 1911. Known by 1951 as chief fire warden in the Division of Forestry, Dept. of Conservation, in 1953 that official was designated as head of the Bureau of Fire Control (also known as Bureau of Forest Fire Control) in the Division of Forests and Parks, Dept. of Natural Resources (Dept. of Environmental Management since 1975).
